Registered Apprenticeship Program Supplemental Instruction

Participants in a registered apprenticeship program are required to complete 144 hours of supplemental instruction.  Participating SU/SDs will cover some of these hours within professional development provided and arrange access to outside providers for a substantial number of hours.  Some costs will be covered by the SU/SD, yet apprentices may need to access funds from sources such as the Vermont Teacher Forgivable Loan Program or the Advancement Grant.  VREC is exploring the potential use of Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) Funds to support these activities.

Undergraduate Coursework

The first and most important thing you need to do if you need to complete an undergraduate degree is to fill out the FAFSA (Federal Application For Student Aid.) This is essential to determine your eligibility for needs-based grants, scholarships and student loans.  There are also competitive scholarships granted by high schools and colleges that require application.

Graduate Coursework

If you have a BA, and take graduate courses to prepare for teaching, most Vermont higher education institutions have a similar tuition rate to the UVM in-state tuition rate, currently (23-24) $678/credit hour, or $2034 for a 3 credit course. Most collective bargaining agreements in Vermont provide up to 6 credits of tuition reimbursement at the UVM rate ($4068 during 2023-2024) for credit bearing courses.  Teachers also typically have access to funds for non-credit bearing professional development opportunities such as workshops & conferences.  The terms of collective bargaining agreements can vary, so it is important to review those terms and reach out to the HR person in your SU/SD for guidance on how to access these funds.

In many cases,  individuals will have tuition costs that will not be covered by local tuition reimbursement.

An important first step is to fill out the FAFSA (Federal Application For Student Aid.) form.  This is essential to determine your eligibility for needs-based grants, scholarships and student loans.
