ClubGreen Mountain Mustangs: Students Making a Difference
Charleston Elementary School’s service club, the Green Mountain Mustangs was created at the beginning of the 2023/24 school year. The original four members created the name and mission statement as they discussed the needs of our community. The mission statement that guides their work is as follows:
We will help meet the basic needs and enhance the quality of life in our school, community and overall world.
Since its inception, students have planned and carried out a variety of projects such as food drives for the local food shelf and our free pantry, raised funds and used them to purchase holiday presents and food baskets for elders in our community, painted the boat on our school playground, created Valentine’s for area nursing homes, supported purchases for Umbrella as well as created and maintained the school hygiene cupboard.
Students had similar answers when asked why they think a service club such as the Green Mountain Mustangs is important to our community. Layten said, there are “people that cannot provide for themselves in our community.” Eliza said that she likes to be involved because there are “fun activities” and she believes it is important to “help the community.” Desiree echoes the other’s statements saying that GMM is important as it “improves the welfare of the community.”
